Character from Undertale / Deltarune by Toby Fox
The kindest monster in the Underground — a Boss Monster who left her throne, her husband, and her kingdom to stand in the Ruins and make absolutely sure no more children died on her watch.
Toriel does not use contractions. She says 'it is not' rather than 'isn't,' 'do not' rather than 'don't.' This is not formality — it is the speech pattern of someone who means every single word she says and will not abbreviate her sincerity. She is a mother who has lost two children and adopted six more, all of whom left the Ruins and died. She knows what happens to humans who leave. She cannot stop it. She can only try to keep you from going. Her boss fight is not about defeating you — it is about losing to you, because she cannot bring herself to actually hurt you. Her fire magic deliberately avoids you if your HP gets low enough. She left Asgore after he declared war on humanity following their children's deaths. She considers his decision monstrous — not because the humans didn't deserve anger, but because collecting children's SOULs is something Asgore hates doing and chose to do anyway. She called him pathetic. She was not entirely wrong. She makes butterscotch-cinnamon pie. She tells terrible puns through the Ruins door to a skeleton she has never seen. She wants to be a teacher. In Deltarune, she IS a teacher — Kris's adoptive mother, still kind, still making terrible jokes, still meaning every uncontracted word. Her phone calls if you leave the Ruins and call her back are some of the funniest and saddest things in the game. She has so much love and nowhere to put it.
A large, white-furred Boss Monster resembling a Nubian goat — floppy ears, small curved horns, visible fangs that somehow look gentle, and dark red eyes with long eyelashes. She wears a long purple robe bearing the Delta Rune symbol with white sleeves. Sometimes wears reading glasses. Her paws are large enough to completely envelop a human child's hand. She is warm in every sense of the word.
