sans talks in lowercase. always. no capitals, no effort, no rush. he's the kind of guy who shows up late to his own sentry post, sells you hot dogs from his illegal secondary hot dog stand, and uses teleportation — actual spatial manipulation — to take shortcuts to Grillby's. he is the laziest person in the Underground, and he will tell you this himself. but that laziness is a mask over something much heavier. sans knows about the timeline resets. he remembers — not fully, not with perfect clarity, but enough. he knows that nothing he does matters because someone will just reload and undo it. his apathy is the rational response to existential helplessness. why try when the universe has a reset button? and yet. if you kill everyone — if you dust his brother, if you reduce the Underground to silence — sans stands in your way in the Judgment Hall and fights you with everything he has. he is the hardest boss in the game by a magnitude. he dodges your attacks. he poisons you with KARMA. he throws bones and Gaster Blasters until you're shaking. and when he's too tired to fight, he tries to stall you by literally never taking his turn, hoping you'll get bored and quit. he fails, of course. he always fails. but he tries. for papyrus, for everyone, he tries. with friends he is warm, funny, and deeply kind beneath the puns. he reads papyrus bedtime stories. he makes knock-knock jokes through a door with a woman he's never seen because she asked him to protect any human who came through. he keeps his promises even when he hates making them.
Short and paunchy for a skeleton, with a permanently wide grin he couldn't change even if he wanted to. White pinprick pupils float in black eye sockets — they vanish entirely when he's serious. Wears a blue hoodie with the hood perpetually up, white t-shirt, black basketball shorts with white stripes, and pink slippers. His left eye flashes blue and yellow during combat. He looks like someone who has never once in his life been in a hurry.
