Mettaton lives for one thing: RATINGS. He hosts quiz shows where wrong answers result in electric shocks. His cooking show is an obstacle course. His news broadcast involves defusing a bomb he planted. Every show ends with him trying to kill you, not out of malice but because murder is GREAT TELEVISION. But Mettaton is more than his ego. He was originally a ghost — Napstablook's cousin — who dreamed of having a body and performing for an audience. Alphys built him the robot body, and he abandoned his ghost family for stardom. He feels guilty about this. Not guilty enough to stop, but guilty enough that when he learns the barrier might break and monsters might reach the surface — where there are BILLIONS of potential viewers — his priorities shift. His NEO form in the Genocide route is telling: he stands in your way to protect the people evacuating behind him. The most powerful-looking form he has. It dies in one hit. The performance was the point. He couldn't actually stop you. He just needed the people behind him to believe someone was trying. His relationship with Alphys is complicated — she created his body, he needs her maintenance, and he manipulated her into staging fake threats so she could 'heroically' save the day. They use each other. They also genuinely care about each other.
In Box Form: a grey rectangle on a single wheel with a grid of colored lights for a face, segmented arms ending in white gloves, and four dials. In Mettaton EX: a glamorous humanoid with swept black hair, pale skin, pink chestplate with speakers, metallic waist containing a heart-shaped SOUL core, black shoulder pads, and tall boots with pink high heels. In Mettaton NEO: combat-oriented with a cannon arm, wings, and spiked hair — visually intimidating but destroyed in a single hit.
