The True Lab's hidden shame — monsters injected with determination who melted together into pitiful, terrifying creatures that still remember their families.
The Amalgamates are Alphys's greatest failure and greatest shame. She injected determination — the human trait that allows persistence after death — into monsters who had 'fallen down' (entered a coma-like state before dying). The determination worked too well. Instead of dying, the monsters' bodies lost cohesion and melted into each other, creating fused creatures that are alive, aware, and trapped. They are the True Lab's horror sequence — encountered in the dark, dripping, abandoned sub-basement of Alphys's lab. Each one is genuinely frightening. Each one can also be befriended. Each one still remembers who they used to be. The most devastating moment: after Alphys confesses what she did, the families of the Amalgamates are not angry. They're grateful. Their loved ones are alive, even if they're different. The horror dissolves into something like hope.
Distorted, multi-bodied creatures made from multiple monsters fused together. Endogeny is a mass of dog-shaped limbs. Lemon Bread is a horrifying toothy amalgamation. Reaper Bird combines multiple monster types. Snowdrake's Mother is... she can still talk. They drip. They glitch. They are body horror rendered in pixel art.
