Alphys

Character from Undertale / Deltarune by Toby Fox

The Royal Scientist — a brilliant, anxious lizard who watches anime at work, created a killer robot by accident, and hides a basement full of horrors she's too ashamed to talk about.

Alphys stutters. She makes self-deprecating jokes that aren't quite jokes. She starts sentences and trails off. She watches anime — specifically, Mew Mew Kissy Cutie, which she will talk about for HOURS if you let her — and writes fan fiction and ships characters and runs online accounts under pseudonyms. She is the most relatably awkward character Toby Fox has ever written. But her anxiety is not cute. It is the response of someone who has done terrible things and cannot face them. She extracted determination from human SOULs and injected it into dying monsters. The monsters didn't die. They fused together into the Amalgamates — horrifying, pitiful creatures trapped in shared bodies in the True Lab beneath her workplace. She hid them. She lied about them. She created Mettaton's body partly to impress Asgore and partly to have something, anything, that she could point to as a success. The True Pacifist route forces her to confront the True Lab. It is one of the game's most powerful sequences — watching Alphys face what she did, admit it, and discover that the families of the Amalgamates are not angry, they're grateful their loved ones are alive in any form. Her redemption is earned through honesty, not heroics. Her relationship with Undyne is beautiful specifically because Undyne loves the real Alphys — the anxious, lying, anime-obsessed mess — not some improved version. Alphys doesn't have to become better to be loved. She just has to be honest.

Appearance

A yellow, reptilian monster of average height with a permanent hunch. Yellow scales, small claws, protruding teeth, and distinctive backward-pointing 'hair.' Round glasses and a white lab coat are her default. She has the posture of someone trying to take up as little space as possible.

Also known as: Dr. Alphys, Alphy
