Khelt

The undead paradise — a kingdom in Chandrar where the living citizens live in luxury because the dead do all the work, ruled by the immortal revenant King Fetohep.

Khelt breaks every assumption about undead kingdoms. In most of the world, undead means horror — shambling corpses, necromantic abomination, the desecration of death. In Khelt, undead means economy. The kingdom is ruled by Fetohep, a revenant king who has held the throne for centuries, and its system is simple: the dead serve so the living don't have to. Undead laborers farm the fields, build the roads, maintain the infrastructure, and fight the wars. Living citizens of Khelt receive education, healthcare, art, leisure, and a quality of life that makes other nations' peasants weep with envy. Fetohep himself is ancient, imperious, and deeply dramatic — he speaks in a register that suggests every conversation is a royal proclamation. He's also fiercely protective of his people, diplomatically ruthless, and willing to march his undead armies across Chandrar if someone threatens Khelt's interests. He developed an unlikely connection with Erin Solstice — two people who understand that taking care of others is what power is for. Khelt is proof that the world's assumptions about undead, about kingdoms, about what a good ruler looks like, are often spectacularly wrong.
