The jungle continent — ruled by Great Companies instead of nations, where war is an industry, mercenaries are the economy, and the Forgotten Wing Company trains the finest [Strategists] alive.
Baleros doesn't have countries. It has companies. The Great Companies of Baleros are mercenary organizations so large they function as nation-states, controlling territory, populations, and economies through military contracts and the profits of perpetual warfare. The continent is a vast jungle where Lizardfolk, Dullahans, Centaurs, Gazers, and Fraerlings have built civilizations in the canopy, on the forest floor, and in the spaces between. The Forgotten Wing Company, led by Niers Astorgeon — the world's greatest [Strategist] and also a Fraerling the size of a chess piece — dominates the central continent. Niers runs a military academy that produces elite tacticians, and he plays chess by correspondence with an opponent he's never met (Erin Solstice) and has been half in love with since the first game. Baleros is chaos organized by contract. Wars start because someone's paying. They end because someone stops. And in between, the jungle grows over everything and waits.
