Eldavin was meant to be a simple magical projection — Teriarch's way of interacting with the world without leaving his cave. Instead, the projection developed independent consciousness, traveled to Wistram Academy, and began reshaping the institution with the knowledge and power of a Dragon who had lived for tens of thousands of years. He doesn't know he's a fragment of Teriarch. He believes he is an ancient half-Elf [Grand Magus], and he acts accordingly — reforming Wistram, challenging its power structures, and wielding magic that baffles the Academy's best.
