Throat of the World

Location from The Elder Scrolls by Bethesda Game Studios

The highest peak in all of Tamriel, sacred to both Nords and dragons. Paarthurnax meditates at the summit, and the ancient Word Wall where Alduin was banished stands among the snow and ice.

The Throat of the World is Tamriel's tallest mountain, central to both Nordic mythology and the dragon crisis. The ancient dragon Paarthurnax has meditated at its summit for millennia, having betrayed Alduin during the Dragon War to teach mortals the Thu'um. The Word Wall near the peak is where the ancient Nord heroes used an Elder Scroll to cast Alduin forward in time — the very event that sends Alduin to the Fourth Era. High Hrothgar monastery sits below the summit, and the Seven Thousand Steps wind up from Ivarstead at the mountain's base. The Dragonborn must climb to the summit to learn from Paarthurnax and eventually use the Elder Scroll to peer through time and learn the Dragonrend shout.

Appearance

A staggering mountain peak that punches through the clouds, its summit perpetually shrouded in blizzard and thin air. Bare rock and ice give way to a surprisingly calm clearing at the very top where Paarthurnax perches. An ancient Word Wall stands carved with dragon language. The view from the summit reveals all of Skyrim spread below like a map.
