Riften

Location from The Elder Scrolls by Bethesda Game Studios

Southeastern Skyrim city notorious for corruption and home to the Thieves Guild. Built along canal waterways with a prosperous fishery and meadery above, and a criminal underworld in the Ratway below.

Riften sits on the shores of Lake Honrich in southeastern Skyrim, its economy built on fishing and Black-Briar Mead. Beneath its pleasant lakeside facade, the city is thoroughly corrupt. Maven Black-Briar effectively controls Riften through wealth, intimidation, and her connections to both the Thieves Guild and the Dark Brotherhood. The Thieves Guild operates from the Ragged Flagon in the Ratway, a network of tunnels beneath the city. Under Brynjolf and later Karliah's guidance, the Guild seeks to restore its former glory after Mercer Frey's betrayal. The Temple of Mara presides over all marriages in Skyrim, adding an incongruous note of sanctity to the city's otherwise criminal character.

Appearance

A lakeside city of wooden boardwalks and canal bridges, with autumn-colored trees lining the waterfront. The upper level bustles with market stalls and the Bee and Barb tavern, while the lower level reveals dank canal passages leading to the Ratway's tunnels. Honeyside manor overlooks Lake Honrich. Mistveil Keep rises above the town center.
