Ancient mountain monastery of the Greybeards, located near the summit of the Throat of the World. The Dragonborn climbs the Seven Thousand Steps to learn the Way of the Voice from these reclusive masters.
High Hrothgar has served as the Greybeards' monastery for thousands of years, positioned near the peak of the Throat of the World. The Greybeards are masters of the Thu'um — the Voice — who follow the Way of the Voice taught by Jurgen Windcaller after the Nords' defeat at Red Mountain. Only four Greybeards currently reside in High Hrothgar, led by Arngeir, the only one who can speak without destroying everything around him. When the Dragonborn is revealed, the Greybeards summon them with a thundering call that echoes across all of Skyrim. High Hrothgar also serves as neutral ground for the peace council between the Stormcloaks and the Imperial Legion during the dragon crisis.
A severe stone monastery of dark grey rock, partially buried in perpetual snow and buffeted by screaming mountain winds. The architecture is stark and unadorned, built to endure rather than impress. Carved stone tablets line the path of the Seven Thousand Steps leading up to its gates. The thin air and howling gales make simply standing outside a test of endurance.
