Impenetrable swamp province of the Argonians, connected to the sentient Hist trees that guide their civilization. Black Marsh repelled the Oblivion Crisis and invaded Morrowind during the Red Year.
Black Marsh is Tamriel's most inhospitable province, a vast swampland so hostile to outsiders that no foreign power has ever successfully occupied it for long. The Argonians thrive here, guided by the Hist — ancient sentient trees that form a hive-like consciousness and communicate with Argonians through psychic bonds forged at birth by drinking Hist sap. When the Oblivion Crisis struck, the Hist rallied the Argonians into such a ferocious counterattack that the Daedra were forced to close their own gates. Emboldened, the Argonians then invaded southern Morrowind during the chaos of the Red Year. Black Marsh has effectively declared independence from the Empire, governed by the An-Xileel political faction.
Fetid swampland stretches endlessly beneath a canopy of twisted mangrove and cypress. Murky waters hide venomous creatures and disease-carrying insects in every stagnant pool. Bioluminescent fungi cast eerie light through perpetual mist. The Hist trees tower above all else, their massive trunks pulsing with alien intelligence.
