Keening

Item from The Elder Scrolls by Bethesda Game Studios

A legendary Dwemer dagger crafted by the Tonal Architect Kagrenac to tap the divine power of the Heart of Lorkhan. One of three Tools of Kagrenac that shaped Morrowind's history and may have caused the Dwemer's disappearance.

Keening is one of Kagrenac's three Tools — alongside Sunder and Wraithguard — created to harness the divine power of the Heart of Lorkhan, the dead god's heart buried beneath Red Mountain. The Dwemer sought to use the Heart to achieve godhood, but when Kagrenac struck the Heart with his tools during the Battle of Red Mountain, the entire Dwemer race vanished from existence. The Tribunal later used the same tools to draw power from the Heart, becoming living gods. In Morrowind, the Nerevarine wielded Keening to destroy the Heart and end Dagoth Ur's power. In Skyrim, a diminished Keening can be found during a College of Winterhold quest, though without Wraithguard it is dangerous to wield.

Appearance

A slender Dwemer dagger of blue-green metal with an unusually long blade for its type. The weapon hums with a faint resonant tone, vibrating at a frequency that feels wrong against the skin. Dwemer runes etch its surface, still glowing faintly with tonal magic after millennia.

Also known as: Keening, Kagrenac's Keening, the Dagger
