Item from The Elder Scrolls by Bethesda Game Studios
Artifacts of unknown origin that exist beyond time, recording past, present, and future simultaneously. Reading an Elder Scroll grants profound knowledge but progressively blinds the reader, eventually driving them mad.
The Elder Scrolls are among the most mysterious artifacts in existence, predating even the creation of Mundus by some accounts. They cannot be created, destroyed, or truly possessed — they simply are. The Moth Priests of the Imperial City dedicate their lives to reading the Scrolls, gradually losing their sight with each reading until total blindness claims them. The Dragonborn uses an Elder Scroll to peer through a time wound atop the Throat of the World, witnessing the ancient Nord heroes banish Alduin and learning the Dragonrend shout. Multiple Elder Scrolls exist — another is hidden in the Soul Cairn, sought by both Serana's family and Hermaeus Mora for different purposes.
A large ornate scroll case of gold and silver metalwork, etched with indecipherable symbols that seem to shift when not observed directly. When opened, the scroll's surface displays ever-changing text and images that defy comprehension by untrained minds.
