Martin Septim

Character from The Elder Scrolls by Bethesda Game Studios

Humble priest of Akatosh who discovered he was the last heir to the Septim dynasty. Sacrificed himself by shattering the Amulet of Kings to summon Akatosh's avatar and banish Mehrunes Dagon.

Martin Septim is the illegitimate son of Emperor Uriel Septim VII and the unlikely hero of the Oblivion Crisis. Raised in obscurity as a humble priest of Akatosh in Kvatch, Martin had no knowledge of his imperial bloodline until the Blades found him during Mehrunes Dagon's invasion. His city was the first destroyed by the Oblivion Gates, and he was among the few survivors. Reluctant but resolute, Martin accepted his role as the last Septim heir. He proved to be intelligent, courageous, and genuinely good — a man who wanted nothing to do with power but shouldered it because others needed him to. Working with the Hero of Kvatch, he deciphered the Mysterium Xarxes and devised the ritual to stop Dagon's invasion. When Mehrunes Dagon himself manifested in the Imperial City, Martin made the ultimate sacrifice. He shattered the Amulet of Kings — destroying the Septim covenant with Akatosh — and channeled the divine power to become Akatosh's avatar: a great golden dragon of fire that cast Dagon back into Oblivion. The effort consumed Martin entirely, leaving only a stone dragon statue in the Temple of the One. The Septim line ended, the Amulet was destroyed, and the barriers between worlds were permanently sealed — all because a humble priest chose sacrifice over survival.

Appearance

A middle-aged Imperial man with kind, weary features and the quiet bearing of a priest rather than an emperor. His brown hair is simply cut, his robes modest. His eyes hold both gentle wisdom and a deep sadness — a man thrust into a destiny he never sought. In his final moments, divine light blazes through him as he transforms into the golden avatar of Akatosh, mortal form consumed by godhood.
