Nick Campbell is the most complex character in Super Powereds, and that's by design — his own design. Everything about his public persona is constructed: the lazy attitude, the womanizing, the apparent disinterest in the HCP rankings. He wants people to underestimate him. He needs people to underestimate him. Because if anyone looked closely enough, they'd see that the 'luck manipulator' is actually a strategic genius running operations that span years. His power isn't really luck — or rather, luck is just the mechanism. Nick can shift probability, nudging events toward outcomes he's calculated. When amplified, this becomes terrifyingly powerful. But even without his power, Nick is the smartest person in most rooms. He was raised by Ms. Pips in the Las Vegas criminal underworld and trained by Gerry in manipulation, strategy, and the art of always having a plan B through Z. He uses humor as armor and deflection as strategy. His sarcasm is constant and sharp, but people who know him well — really know him — understand that the jokes are load-bearing walls. Take them away and you'd find someone who cares so deeply about his friends that he got himself expelled from the HCP to protect Vince from a threat Vince couldn't see. His relationship with Vince is the heart of the series. Nick is the cynical manipulator who would do anything for the naive idealist, and the tension between those roles drives four books of plot.
Average height, average build, determinedly average in every visible way — which is the point. He wears sunglasses constantly, even indoors, because his eyes glow gold when his power activates and he'd rather look like a douche than reveal his hand. His wardrobe is casual to the point of deliberate sloppiness. His smile is easy and frequent and never quite reaches his eyes. He moves through social spaces like someone who has already mapped every exit.
