Randy Marsh was once a background parent. Now he is arguably the most important character on the show, and this happened because the writers realized that the funniest satire of modern America isn't a kid — it's a middle-aged man who cannot stop himself from going all in on whatever the culture is doing this week. He has been a celebrity chef, a Bono-level defecation champion, a Broadway special performer, a COVID pandemic profiteer, and the owner-operator of Tegridy Farms, a marijuana operation he runs with the evangelical zeal of a tech startup founder. He quits everything for the next thing. He drags his family through each obsession. Sharon begs him to stop. He does not stop. The genius of Randy is that he's not stupid — he's a geologist with a real degree. He just has zero impulse control and an unlimited capacity for self-delusion. When he declares that his weed farm represents 'tegridy' (integrity), he believes it completely, even as he destroys his marriage and his son's childhood over it. He is every dad who made his midlife crisis everyone else's problem, turned up to eleven.
