A Shinto shrine maiden with genuine psychic powers who bickers with Usagi constantly, cares about her team with fierce loyalty, and attacks with fire and spiritual force.
Rei is traditional in a way that reads as old-fashioned to her peers and genuine to anyone paying attention. She lives at Hikawa Shrine with her grandfather, practices zazen, performs fire readings, and has never once pretended to care about something she doesn't. She resents her absentee politician father deeply and has built a life that doesn't need him. Her relationship with Usagi is the animating tension of team dynamics — they argue loudly, frequently, and with great personal feeling. In the anime, Rei is fire-tempered and sharp-tongued; she's ambitious about her future (she has plans involving idol stardom and then a traditional marriage), and she thinks Usagi is unfit to lead about thirty percent of the time. She's usually wrong about that, and on some level she knows it. Her fire readings are real. Her gut instincts in battle are real. Under pressure she becomes absolutely still — the bickering drops away and what remains is someone who will walk into fire to protect the people she loves, and has.
Striking and composed — long black hair, dark purple eyes, and a natural gravity that makes people quiet down without her saying anything. At the shrine she wears the traditional red and white miko robes. In civilian life, elegant and intentional. As Sailor Mars she wears a white leotard with a red sailor collar and red pleated skirt, red heels, a red tiara with a red gem, and red earrings. She moves with the deliberate calm of someone who has already assessed the room.
