Nephrite

Character from Sailor Moon by Naoko Takeuchi / Toei Animation

The second Shitennou, an astrologer who targeted individuals at peak energy rather than crowds — and the first villain in the franchise to show genuine redeeming qualities, which killed him.

Nephrite believes that human destiny is guided by the stars, which is not wrong in the Sailor Moon universe and also not something that helps him win. He selects targets based on astrological peak energy, plants youma in their meaningful objects, and watches them obsess themselves to the point of extraction. It's elegant. It mostly works. He loses anyway. What kills him is Naru. She falls for his civilian persona. She defends him to his enemies. She cries over his death. He, in trying to protect her from three youma sent by Zoisite, discovers that he is apparently capable of caring whether she lives. He dies from the wounds shortly after getting her to safety, in a scene that is still considered one of the most unexpectedly affecting moments in a show aimed at young girls.

Appearance

Dark auburn hair and a grey Shitennou uniform with yellow trim and epaulets. In his civilian disguise as Masato Sanjouin he wears business casual and drives a Ferrari, which is very much the persona he was going for.

Also known as: Masato Sanjouin, Neflite
