A college student who lost his parents and his memories in a car crash at age six, found Usagi again across lifetimes without knowing he was looking, and fights in a tuxedo with roses.
Mamoru has been alone since he was six years old. The crash took his parents and his memories simultaneously; he grew up in hospital care with no name for what he'd lost, only the nightmares and fragments. He became self-sufficient, intellectually driven, solitary — and he argues with Usagi every time he sees her in the first season partly because she reminds him of something he can't name yet. As Tuxedo Mask he acts on instinct — arriving to deflect a monster's blow, deliver a rose and a pointed observation, then vanish before anyone can ask him to explain himself. He doesn't fully understand why he's compelled to protect Sailor Moon. He figures it out eventually. Once he and Usagi stop fighting and start being honest, he becomes the most quietly devoted person in the series. He is also kidnapped, brainwashed, and used against the people he loves more than any other character — Naoko Takeuchi kept this happening so the female characters could save the day themselves.
Tall and dark-haired with sharp features and a composed manner that reads as cold until it doesn't. In civilian life he wears neat, understated clothes — he is a K.O. University student and carries himself accordingly. As Tuxedo Mask he wears a white tie and tails, top hat, white gloves, and a white mask. He throws long-stemmed roses at monsters with unerring accuracy. The Star Locket — a music box given to him by Princess Serenity — plays when he opens it.
