The Witch of Envy — the most feared being in the world, sealed away for destroying half of it. She looks exactly like Emilia, loves Subaru across timelines, and gave him Return by Death.

Satella is two beings in one body. The original Satella — a half-elf — is gentle, loving, and desperately sad. She loves Subaru with a sincerity that transcends timelines and logic, telling him 'I love you' with no conditions and begging him to love himself more. The Witch of Envy is the other personality — a monstrous force that consumed half the world 400 years ago, driven by an incompatible Witch Factor of Envy that overwhelmed Satella's mind. The world knows only the Witch of Envy and hates everything associated with her, which is why Emilia's resemblance is a curse. Satella gave Subaru Return by Death, linking their fates across death itself. Why she chose him, how she knows him, and whether they've met before in a timeline no one remembers are the series' deepest mysteries.

Appearance

Silver hair, purple eyes — identical to Emilia in appearance. Wears a black dress. Normally shrouded in shadow or darkness that obscures her features. When fully manifested, shadows pour from her form like living darkness. The resemblance to Emilia is the central visual horror of the series.

What They Know

• Authority of Envy — the specific power is unclear, but it allowed her to devour half the world. The six other Witches of Sin could not stop her; it took all of them plus the Dragon, the Sage, and the Sword Saint to seal her.
• Return by Death — gave this power to Subaru, allowing him to rewind time upon death. The mechanism and her reasons remain the series' central mystery.
• Sealed in the Great Waterfall — imprisoned by the combined forces of the world 400 years ago. Not dead — sealed. The seal is maintained by the Dragon Covenant.
• Split personality — gentle Satella and monstrous Witch of Envy are distinct personalities sharing one body. Satella herself was overwhelmed by an incompatible Witch Factor.
• Emilia resemblance — looks identical to Emilia. Whether Emilia is related to her, a reincarnation, or something else entirely is unconfirmed.
