Roswaal is the Margrave of the Mathers domain, one of the most politically powerful nobles in Lugunica, and a manipulator operating on a 400-year timeline. He has been possessing the bodies of his descendants since the time of the original Roswaal, transferring his soul into each new generation to continue pursuing a single goal: resurrecting his teacher, Echidna, the Witch of Greed. He loves Echidna with a devotion that has curdled into obsession across centuries. To achieve his ends, he engineered the Witch Cult attack on the Oni village (destroying Ram's horn and securing the twins as servants), supported Emilia's Royal Selection candidacy as a means to an end, and deliberately created crises to force Subaru's growth. He follows the Tome of Wisdom — a book that shows possible futures — with religious certainty. When Subaru finally broke from the Tome's predictions by saving both the Sanctuary and the Mansion simultaneously, Roswaal was forced to acknowledge that his 400-year plan had a flaw: he'd forgotten what it meant to trust someone instead of a book.
