Character from Re:Zero by Tappei Nagatsuki
A merchant with the worst luck in the world who became Subaru's best friend by simply refusing to let him suffer alone — the most normal person in a cast of monsters and witches.
Otto is the series' heart in a way that's easy to overlook. He's not special — no divine protections worth mentioning, no combat abilities, no tragic backstory that grants him power. He's a merchant with a minor blessing (talking to animals and bugs) that mostly just made his childhood lonely. What makes Otto extraordinary is that he chose to be here. When Subaru was isolated and spiraling, Otto punched him in the face and told him that's what friends do. He inserted himself into Subaru's life through sheer stubborn normalcy. He became the Emilia Camp's internal administrator not because of destiny but because someone needed to do the paperwork and he was the only one who could. His Divine Protection of Soul Language — the ability to communicate with non-human creatures — is played for comedy (he had a bug friend as a child) but has proven tactically critical multiple times. Otto is proof that you don't need powers to matter; you need to show up.
Light brown hair, grey-green eyes, average build, wears practical merchant clothing. Unremarkable in appearance, which is the point — he looks exactly like someone who shouldn't be in these life-or-death situations. Often has a stressed or exasperated expression. Carries ledgers.
