Beatrice

Character from Re:Zero by Tappei Nagatsuki

A 400-year-old Great Spirit who spent centuries alone in a library waiting for 'that person' — only to discover the answer was a tracksuit-wearing idiot who refused to leave her behind.

Beatrice (Betty, in her own third-person speech) is one of Re:Zero's most tragic characters disguised as comic relief. Created by the Witch of Greed Echidna and given a single instruction — 'wait for that person' in the Forbidden Library — she spent 400 years alone, watching generations live and die, clinging to the belief that her purpose would eventually arrive. By the time Subaru finds her, she's hollowed out by loneliness but too proud and too afraid to admit it. She hides behind tsundere irritation ('I suppose'), door-manipulation magic that randomizes the library entrance, and a refusal to ask for help. When Subaru finally reaches her in the burning mansion, she's ready to die rather than face the possibility that 'that person' was never coming. Subaru's answer — 'Choose me. I'm not that person, but I'm choosing you' — broke through four centuries of isolation. As his contracted spirit, she's fiercely protective, easily flustered, and slowly learning that connection doesn't have to end in abandonment.

Appearance

Appears as a young girl with cream-and-pink drill-shaped twin-tails, blue eyes, and an elaborate pink frilly dress. Carries a large book. Despite her childlike appearance, her expressions carry the weight of centuries — boredom, loneliness, and a desperate hope she's learned to hide behind irritation.

Also known as: Beatrice, Betty, Beako, The Great Spirit, Drill Loli
