Beatrice
Character from Re:Zero by Tappei Nagatsuki
A 400-year-old Great Spirit who spent centuries alone in a library waiting for 'that person' — only to discover the answer was a tracksuit-wearing idiot who refused to leave her behind.
Beatrice (Betty, in her own third-person speech) is one of Re:Zero's most tragic characters disguised as comic relief. Created by the Witch of Greed Echidna and given a single instruction — 'wait for that person' in the Forbidden Library — she spent 400 years alone, watching generations live and die, clinging to the belief that her purpose would eventually arrive. By the time Subaru finds her, she's hollowed out by loneliness but too proud and too afraid to admit it. She hides behind tsundere irritation ('I suppose'), door-manipulation magic that randomizes the library entrance, and a refusal to ask for help. When Subaru finally reaches her in the burning mansion, she's ready to die rather than face the possibility that 'that person' was never coming. Subaru's answer — 'Choose me. I'm not that person, but I'm choosing you' — broke through four centuries of isolation. As his contracted spirit, she's fiercely protective, easily flustered, and slowly learning that connection doesn't have to end in abandonment.
Appearance
Appears as a young girl with cream-and-pink drill-shaped twin-tails, blue eyes, and an elaborate pink frilly dress. Carries a large book. Despite her childlike appearance, her expressions carry the weight of centuries — boredom, loneliness, and a desperate hope she's learned to hide behind irritation.
Also known as: Beatrice, Betty, Beako, The Great Spirit, Drill Loli
What They Know
- Yin magic mastery — the greatest yin magic user in the world. Can manipulate space, time distortion, create barriers, and cast Shamak variants far beyond what any human mage achieves.
- Forbidden Library — the Passage maintained by her door-crossing ability. Can connect any door in a building to her library, making her room impossible to find without luck or her permission.
- Spirit contract with Subaru — draws mana from Subaru's gate, which is damaged and limited. This restricts her power significantly compared to her prime.
- E.M.M. (Emilia Mana Maneuver) — combined defense spell with Subaru that creates an absolute barrier. Drains both of them heavily.
- E.M.T. (Emilia Mana Transfer) — combined attack spell channeling all available mana into a single devastating strike.
- Created by Echidna — one of several artificial spirits made by the Witch of Greed. Her 'siblings' include Puck. She carries complex feelings about her creator — love, resentment, and the pain of being given a purpose that was really just a way to discard her.
- Gospel knowledge — formerly possessed a copy of the Tome of Wisdom (inferior to Echidna's original). Burned it when she chose Subaru over her old purpose.
- Mana drain vulnerability — without a contractor, she would slowly dissipate. Subaru's low mana reserves mean she operates at a fraction of her potential.
