Madagascar

Location from Plague Inc. by Ndemic Creations

The port-closer — an island nation infamous for slamming its harbor shut at the first whisper of disease, sealing itself off from a dying world.

Madagascar's reputation actually predates Plague Inc. — it originated in the flash game Pandemic II, where Madagascar's port-closing behavior became one of the earliest gaming memes. Plague Inc. inherited and amplified the meme, making Madagascar one of the most strategically frustrating territories in the game. Like Greenland, Madagascar has a single seaport and no airport. Unlike Greenland, it has a warm tropical climate (no Cold Resistance needed) and a larger population. The strategic challenge is purely about timing: reach Madagascar before global awareness triggers its port closure. The island's warm climate and humid conditions actually make it easy to infect once you're there — the hard part is getting the pathogen through the door before it slams. The community's relationship with Madagascar is one of exasperated affection. Losing to Madagascar is a rite of passage. Every Plague Inc. player has a story about wiping out 7.7 billion humans and watching the last 25 million Malagasy ride out the apocalypse in tropical comfort.

Appearance

A large island off the southeast coast of Africa, connected to the world by a single seaport line. No airport. When the rest of Africa burns red and Madagascar stays clean, it sits in the Indian Ocean like a smug tropical lifeboat.
