Insanity

Item from Plague Inc. by Ndemic Creations

The mind-breaker — a neurological symptom that makes hosts erratic and irrational, slowing cure research because you can't cure what you can't study rationally.

Insanity is a dual-purpose symptom: it increases severity (making the disease more noticeable and harder to ignore) while simultaneously slowing cure research (because insane populations are harder to coordinate for medical studies). This makes it one of the most strategically interesting symptoms in the game. The cure-slowing effect is the key value. Most high-severity symptoms accelerate the cure by drawing attention and funding. Insanity is one of the rare symptoms that does the opposite — it's severe enough to cause social disruption but disruptive in a way that undermines the very institutions trying to develop a cure. Researchers can't collect samples from subjects who won't cooperate. Governments can't enforce quarantines on populations that don't recognize authority.

Appearance

On the symptom tree, Insanity branches from the neurological pathway — connected to symptoms like Paranoia and Seizures. Its icon suggests cognitive disintegration. When evolved, news ticker headlines shift to report erratic public behavior and breakdown of social order.
