Coma

Item from Plague Inc. by Ndemic Creations

The shutdown — a neurological symptom that renders hosts completely unconscious, overwhelming hospitals and slowing cure research to a crawl.

Coma is the neurological pathway's answer to Total Organ Failure — not as immediately lethal, but devastating to healthcare systems and cure research in ways that raw lethality isn't. When millions of people simultaneously fall into comas, every hospital bed is occupied, every ventilator is in use, and the medical professionals who should be working on the cure are instead managing life support for a population that can't be woken up. The severity rating is extreme, which has a dual effect: it accelerates cure research through global panic, but it also strains the medical infrastructure needed to actually develop and distribute that cure. In countries with limited ICU capacity, Coma effectively shuts down the healthcare system entirely — and a country without a functioning healthcare system can't contribute to cure research.

Appearance

At the far end of the neurological symptom branch, Coma sits as the ultimate expression of neural shutdown. Its icon suggests total brain inactivity — a flatline. Evolving it triggers news headlines about overwhelmed ICUs and ventilator shortages.
