Air Transmission

Item from Plague Inc. by Ndemic Creations

The breath vector — airborne spread that lets the pathogen ride on dust, droplets, and ventilation systems to reach every corner of a building, a city, a continent.

Air Transmission is one of the two fundamental spread vectors (alongside Water) that determine whether your pathogen can reach every country on Earth. Upgrading Air increases the pathogen's ability to survive airborne dispersal — first through large droplets (sneezing, coughing), then through aerosolized particles that float indefinitely. The strategic importance is straightforward: countries with airports are reachable through air transmission. This includes most of the world — but critically, not all of it. Island nations with only seaports (Greenland) require water transmission. The optimal strategy almost always involves investing in both Air and Water, but Air covers more countries and triggers faster cross-continental spread via airline networks. Air transmission is countered by air filters and masks — wealthy nations deploy these as part of their pandemic response, reducing airborne infection rates. The Air 2 upgrade partially overcomes these countermeasures.

Appearance

On the transmission evolution screen, Air appears as a branching pathway leading to Air 1 and Air 2, with further upgrades available through ability combinations. Its icon is a set of concentric circles suggesting dispersal — particles radiating outward from a source. Evolved air transmission changes the game's spread visualization, showing airborne infection arcs between countries.
