Bacteria

Character from Plague Inc. by Ndemic Creations

The generalist pathogen — no tricks, no gimmicks, just reliable cellular machinery and the flexibility to become anything evolution demands.

Bacteria is the fundamentals player. No flashy special mechanics, no dramatic weakness — just solid, adaptable pathogenic infrastructure. It plays like a chess grandmaster who only needs basic openings because their midgame is flawless. Its special ability is Bacterial Resilience — a set of environmental hardening upgrades that let it survive in any climate, any biome, any water supply. Where other pathogens need to specialize, Bacteria simply... endures. Cold countries, hot countries, rich countries, poor countries — Bacteria treats them all as roughly equivalent problems to solve. This is the pathogen new players learn on, and the one veterans return to when they want a clean, strategic game without chaos. It doesn't mutate uncontrollably like Virus. It doesn't struggle to spread like Fungus. It doesn't race a clock like Nano-Virus. It just methodically infects the world, one transmission upgrade at a time, and by the time the WHO notices, every country on Earth has red dots.

Appearance

Under the electron microscope: a simple prokaryotic cell, rod-shaped or spherical depending on strain, surrounded by a thick peptidoglycan wall. On the game's evolution screen, it appears as a pulsing red-orange organism against a dark background, branching transmission and symptom pathways radiating outward like a malevolent constellation. Unremarkable to look at. That's the point.
