Wistful Wild

Location from Pikmin 2 by Nintendo / Shigeru Miyamoto

The fourth and final surface area — autumnal, haunted by Louie's absence, unlocked only after the debt is repaid. The game's hardest caves are here.

Wistful Wild is the game's final act, and it wears the season well. The 'wistful' in the name is accurate — there's a vague, autumnal longing built into the design. The debt is paid. Louie is gone. The President has arrived. The caves here are the hardest in the game. The Cavern of Chaos. The Hole of Heroes. The Dream Den, with its fourteen sublevels and its final boss sitting at the bottom under a man who may have been in control of the whole time. No above-ground boss fights here. The threats are underground. The surface is almost peaceful, which makes it feel like the world is holding its breath.

Appearance

Autumn has settled in. The leaves are turning. Rusted metal structures jut from the terrain. Tree stumps, Foxtails, Burgeoning Spiderworts in three colors. Two lakes — one drainable, one bridged. The landing site is a faded YIELD sign. Somewhere in the distance, firefly-like insects drift in the air near the Dream Den entrance.

Also known as: Wistful Wild, Land of Promise, Terra di Promesse
