Character from Pikmin 2 by Nintendo / Shigeru Miyamoto
A snake-egret hybrid that ambushes from underground — it surfaces to snatch Pikmin in its beak, then retreats before you can hurt it, and has been doing this since the first game.
The Burrowing Snagret is the most patient hunter on PNF-404. It waits underground. It listens. When something comes close enough, it rises with the inevitability of a bad dream — all beak and reach and then it's gone again before anyone can throw something at it. The trick is the stuck moment: sometimes it surfaces badly and can't go back down immediately. That's the window. A good captain knows to recognize it and throw immediately. Olimar has encountered Burrowing Snagrets in every game he's played, which is to say every expedition he's survived. They are recurring. They are consistent. They are a kind of test.
A long serpentine body with blue-scaled (or possibly feathered — sources disagree) flesh, topped with a white, egret-like head. The head emerges from the ground on a neck that extends well above Pikmin height. Its beak can take three Pikmin at once. When it gets stuck mid-emergence — head above ground, body still underground — that's the only real opening.
