Secret Safe

Item from Pikmin by Nintendo / Shigeru Miyamoto

The last ship part — a piggy bank full of bottle caps guarded by the largest creature on the planet, because even stranded astronauts have things they cannot bear to lose.

The Secret Safe is the last of the thirty ship parts — optional for escape but essential for Olimar's soul. It contains his personal collection of bottle caps (or Pokos, depending on interpretation), hidden from his wife in a safe bolted to his ship. The detail is perfect: a middle-aged family man, stranded on an alien world, fighting the planet's apex predator to recover a piggy bank full of his small rebellions against domestic financial oversight. It sits inside Emperor Bulblax in the Final Trial. The final boss guards the final part, and the final part is not a reactor or a weapon but a safe full of personal treasures. This is Pikmin's tonal signature: the stakes are simultaneously life-or-death and absurdly, tenderly human. Olimar's log on recovering it is the most emotionally open entry in the game: 'At long last... I've found the final part... my Secret Safe! And it's as full as ever! How glad I am that I've persisted in my search without losing hope...'

Appearance

A large safe shaped like a piggy bank, heavy enough to require nearly a full army of Pikmin to carry (weight 40). Makes coin-rattling sounds when dropped or jostled. It does not change the Dolphin's appearance when installed — it was never part of the ship's function, only part of Olimar's life.
