Garou

Character from One-Punch Man by ONE & Yusuke Murata

The Hero Hunter — a martial arts prodigy who declared war on heroes because as a child he noticed the monsters always lose, and nobody ever asks how the monsters feel about it.

Garou is the series' best character because he's the premise taken seriously. In a world of heroes and monsters, he asked the question nobody else did: why do the monsters always have to lose? As a bullied child who identified with the villains in hero shows, he grew up to become the strongest martial artist in the world — and then declared war on the entire hero system. He doesn't want to destroy humanity. He wants to be the ultimate monster — a threat so absolute that humanity unites against him and stops producing heroes who bully the weak in the name of justice. It's a child's logic scaled to cosmic power, and the series treats it with more respect than it deserves because Garou is not entirely wrong. His martial arts are genuine — Water Stream Rock Smashing Fist (Bang's style), Whirlwind Iron Cutting Fist (Bomb's style), and his own adaptive combat that evolves mid-fight by absorbing opponents' techniques. He gets stronger the more he's hurt, the more he's pushed, and the more desperate his situation becomes. His arc from human to monster to god-empowered cosmic threat to... just a guy who wanted fairness... is the series' emotional backbone.

Appearance

Lean and athletic with spiky white hair (originally dark) and sharp, predatory features. He wears a fitted black shirt and pants. As he fights and takes damage, his body progressively monsterifies: black carapace armor grows over his skin, his eyes become monstrous, and his silhouette shifts from human to something between a demon and a disaster. In his final Cosmic Fear Mode, he becomes a being of cosmic energy channeling the power of a god.
