The Catalog of War

Item from The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins

David's domain — every form of violence, combat, strategy, and warfare that any civilization has ever devised, from fistfighting to genocide.

The catalog of war contains the complete knowledge of organized violence. Every martial art, every weapon system, every tactical doctrine, every strategic framework that any civilization — human or otherwise — has ever developed. David has studied here for millennia, and the result is not just skill but transformation. His body has been rebuilt by the knowledge — reflexes operating faster than conscious thought, pattern recognition tuned to combat, a nervous system rewired for threat assessment. The war catalog doesn't just teach you to fight. It teaches you to be a weapon.

Appearance

The war catalog section of the Library is the most physically scarred. Walls are marked with weapon impacts. The air smells of old iron and something that might be blood. Training spaces open off the main corridors — arenas, obstacle courses, simulation chambers that can recreate any battle in history. Weapons of every era line the walls: bronze swords, firearms, energy weapons from civilizations that no longer exist, and things that don't have names in any human language.
