The Catalog of Speed

Item from The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins

Lisa's domain — motion, velocity, and the manipulation of time as it relates to physical movement.

The catalog of speed contains the knowledge of motion pushed to its absolute limits — not just running fast, but understanding velocity, acceleration, and the relationship between movement and time at scales that break normal physics. Lisa's mastery allows her to move at speeds that effectively compress time for her and freeze it for everyone else. The catalog also encompasses the physics of what happens at extreme speed: air displacement, thermal friction, sonic effects, and the structural limits of matter in motion.

Appearance

The speed catalog is the most physically demanding section of the Library. Long corridors stretch to vanishing points — training tracks that extend for miles. The walls are marked with velocity measurements in scripts from dozens of civilizations. The air moves here, always — currents and drafts that suggest something just passed through at enormous speed. Some of the training spaces show impact damage where objects met walls at velocities that should not be possible for solid matter.
