Character from The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins
Father's bull — a massive, ancient beast the size of a pickup truck that grazes on suburban lawns and is far more than an animal.
Nobununga is Father's bull. He is enormous — the size of a small vehicle — and he grazes on the grass medians of Garrison Oaks with the serene indifference of an animal that knows nothing in the neighborhood can threaten it. People who drive past somehow don't notice him, or if they do, they forget immediately. This is not an accident. He is not a normal animal. He has been with Father for longer than any of the children, and Michael — who can communicate with any animal — treats Nobununga with a deference that suggests the bull understands things that ordinary animals don't. He is calm, patient, and immovable. He tolerates the librarians the way a mountain tolerates weather. When Father was present, Nobununga followed him. Now that Father is gone, the bull waits.
Massive — easily the size of a pickup truck, with a barrel chest, thick horns, and a dark hide scarred by age and events that defy explanation. Grazes on suburban lawns with the placid certainty of something that has existed for a very long time. His eyes are dark and liquid and disturbingly intelligent for a bull.
