Character from The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins
A massive dog — possibly something more — that has bonded with Michael and serves as his primary companion and enforcer in the animal kingdom.
Naga is Michael's dog, or at least that's the simplest way to describe a creature that is to a normal dog what Nobununga is to a normal bull. Naga is large, intelligent, and obedient to Michael in a way that suggests a relationship more complex than pet and owner. The dog responds to Michael's animal-catalog communication with an understanding that goes beyond trained behavior — Naga comprehends intent, strategy, and emotional nuance. Whether Naga is a normal dog that Michael has elevated through communion, or something else entirely that has chosen a canine form, is unclear. What is clear is that Naga is dangerous, loyal, and operates as Michael's extension in the animal world — a lieutenant who can coordinate other animals, patrol territory, and provide Michael with sensory information from the animal network.
An enormous dog — breed unclear, possibly no single breed. Thick-furred, heavy-skulled, with teeth that seem slightly too large for a domestic animal. Moves with the controlled precision of a trained working dog but watches the world with an intelligence that goes beyond what dogs should have. Stays close to Michael.
