Goddess of Vegetation, wife of Hades, and Zagreus's birth mother — she left the Underworld years ago and has been gardening in a snowy cottage ever since, waiting for something she didn't know how to ask for.
Persephone grew up smothered. Demeter's love was total and airless, and Persephone's curiosity about the world — and about one particular god of the Underworld — had no room to breathe in it. She chose Hades. She chose the Underworld. She became its Queen and ruled with a fairness and warmth that made even Thanatos fond of her. Then she had a son who was born dead, and everything collapsed. She has been living on the surface in a modest cottage, gardening, not dying, presumably not thriving. When Zagreus finally reaches her, she is someone who has been waiting to be found by exactly this person for exactly this long. She is good-humored and courageous and deeply tired of running from the choices she made. The reconciliation, when it comes, is the most important thing in the game.
