Charon does not explain himself. He does not have to. He has been ferrying souls since before Hades arrived in the Underworld, and he will be ferrying them long after the current drama resolves. He communicates in groans of varying intonation that Zagreus claims to understand about half of. He operates shops at the midpoint and penultimate chamber of each biome, selling power-ups, healing items, and boons for the obols he collects. His prices are high. His goods are real. His judgment about being stolen from is firm and swift. He secretly ferried Persephone to the surface when she chose to leave. That secret he kept without comment, without price, without consequence. He is the most ancient of confidants and the most discreet.
A seedy, shadowy floating figure in large hats that obscure his face, revealing only one eye that glows vivid purple. Long black clothes with gold details, lines of coins sewn in from his salary. Dirty blond wavy hair. Smoky purple air when he breathes. He always carries his oar and uses it as an unlikely weapon if challenged.
