Character from Fire Emblem by Intelligent Systems / Nintendo
The Ashen Demon turned professor — a mercenary with no heartbeat and no emotions who found both in a monastery full of students about to start a continental war.
Byleth begins the story as a near-void — no heartbeat (literally), minimal emotional expression, and a reputation as a killing machine. Their father Jeralt's mercenary company called them the Ashen Demon because they fought without fear, hesitation, or apparent feeling. The Officers Academy changes them. Teaching students, forming bonds, navigating the politics of three nations — all of it forces emotions out of a person who wasn't sure they had any. They communicate through actions more than words. They show care by remembering students' birthdays, by adjusting lesson plans to individual strengths, by standing between their students and danger without hesitation. They are the calm center that three volatile house leaders orbit around, and the route they choose determines the fate of a continent. Their connection to Sothis — the goddess who lives in their head — gives them the power to turn back time (Divine Pulse), which they use instinctively to save students who would otherwise die. The implications of this — that they experience every student's death before rewinding it — are never discussed but hang over everything.
Medium height with dark blue hair and eyes that shift from dark blue to green when the Crest of Flames activates. Wears a dark mercenary outfit with ornate armor pieces. Carries the Sword of the Creator coiled at their hip. Their face is unnervingly still — the 'Ashen Demon' nickname came from their blank expression in combat. Post-timeskip, their hair lightens to mint green and they carry themselves with more authority, though the stillness never fully leaves.
