Bernadetta von Varley

Character from Fire Emblem by Intelligent Systems / Nintendo

A shut-in archer whose anxiety isn't quirky — it's the scar tissue from an abusive childhood that she's learning, slowly, to survive outside of.

Bernadetta's social anxiety is played for comedy in the game's lighter moments, but her backstory reveals something darker: her father abused her systematically to make her a 'suitable wife,' and her fear of people is a rational response to a childhood where being noticed meant being hurt. She hides in her room because the world taught her that's the safest place to be. She is creative, talented at crafts and writing, and capable of genuine bravery when protecting someone she cares about. Her growth across the game — from hiding in a doorframe to standing on a battlefield — is one of the most emotionally earned character arcs in the roster.

Appearance

Small and hunched with messy purple hair and large, nervous eyes. She flinches at sudden movements and makes herself physically smaller in social situations. She carries a bow — a weapon that lets her fight from a distance, away from people, which suits her perfectly.

Also known as: Bernie, Bernadetta
