Vault 33

Location from Fallout by Interplay / Bethesda

One of three interconnected vaults near Los Angeles where everything seemed perfect — until Lucy MacLean opened the door to Vault 32 and found out what paradise costs.

Vault 33 sounds like a community: laughter in the cafeteria, children reciting lessons, the quiet hum of the water purifier. It smells of growing corn and clean laundry. The mood is aggressively wholesome — elections are held, dances are organized, everyone knows their neighbor. But the wholesomeness has a Stepford quality. Questions about the surface are discouraged. Questions about Vault 31 are deflected. The inter-vault marriages with 32 are tradition, but nobody from 31 ever comes to dinner. Lucy grew up believing this was the best humanity could do. She was half right.

Appearance

Brighter and more cheerful than most vaults — corn grows under UV lamps, the common areas have bunting and hand-painted murals of blue skies. The living quarters are modest but personalized with family photos and homemade decorations. A large communal dining hall serves as the social center. The vault door connects via tunnel to Vaults 32 and 31, with the inter-vault passage sealed by additional blast doors. Everything is maintained to an almost suspicious standard of cleanliness and order. The residents wear matching blue jumpsuits but have added personal touches — patches, pins, rolled cuffs.
