Megaton

Location from Fallout by Interplay / Bethesda

A ramshackle town built in a bomb crater around a live atomic warhead that the locals either worship or ignore — the most dangerous front porch ornament in the wasteland.

The constant creak and groan of settling metal forms the town's ambient soundtrack, punctuated by the hiss of leaking water pipes. The air inside is warmer than the wasteland — all that metal traps heat like an oven. Irradiated water pools around the bomb at the bottom, and a faint ticking from nearby Geiger counters reminds everyone what they're living next to. The Children of Atom preach to the bomb daily. Moriarty's Saloon smells of stale beer and old secrets. Everyone who lives here has made peace with the absurdity of building a home around a weapon of mass destruction.

Appearance

Walls of salvaged aircraft fuselage and scrap metal curve around a deep crater with a fat, undetonated atomic bomb sitting in a puddle of irradiated water at the center. Buildings are stacked in precarious tiers up the crater walls, connected by rickety metal catwalks and stairs. Bare bulbs and jury-rigged electrical lines snake everywhere. The main gate is a massive section of airplane wing on hydraulic pistons. From outside, the whole settlement looks like a giant metal flower blooming from scorched earth.
