Location from Fallout by Interplay / Bethesda
The irradiated ruins of Washington D.C., where the shattered monuments of American democracy stand as tombstones over a savage wilderness — every faction in the wasteland wants to claim what these symbols represent.
The air tastes metallic and carries a persistent low-level radiation that makes Geiger counters click softly even on calm days. Wind whistles through hollow government buildings, creating an eerie organ-pipe moan across the Mall. Super mutant war cries echo from the ruins downtown while Brotherhood vertibirds thrum overhead. The smell alternates between ozone, rust, and the sweet rot of irradiated vegetation. At night the Mall glows faintly green, and distant gunfire becomes the wasteland's lullaby. Somewhere a radio crackles with Three Dog's voice, the only warmth in miles of cold stone.
Broken marble columns and collapsed government buildings stretch across a grey-green horizon of irradiated rubble. The Washington Monument stands cracked but defiant against a perpetually overcast sky. Trenches of collapsed metro tunnels scar the terrain between clusters of rusted pre-War vehicles. Murky tidal pools from the poisoned Potomac reflect the skeletal remains of once-grand neoclassical architecture. Everything is coated in fine radioactive dust that catches wan sunlight.
