Marcus speaks with the unhurried patience of someone who has lived long enough to watch civilizations rise and fall and has decided that listening is more valuable than shouting. He has a dry sense of humor about his own condition and the absurdities of wasteland politics, and he deploys it to disarm tension before it can become violence. He served the Master's army in the first Fallout, believing in the vision of forced unity through FEV mutation. When the Master fell, Marcus did not retreat into bitterness — he examined why the vision failed, concluded that unity imposed by force is no unity at all, and spent the next century trying to build voluntary communities instead. Jacobstown is the latest and most successful attempt: a refuge for super mutants in the mountains above New Vegas. The burden Marcus carries is representative guilt. He participated in kidnapping humans for FEV conversion. He cannot undo that. What he can do is spend whatever centuries remain to him proving that super mutants are capable of building rather than destroying, and that the wasteland has room for everyone — even the monsters.
