Da Rules

Item from The Fairly OddParents by Butch Hartman / Nickelodeon

The ancient, enormous, constantly referenced rulebook that governs all fairy magic — full of restrictions that exist because some fairy, at some point, granted a wish that went so badly they had to write a rule about it.

Da Rules is the legal framework of the fairy godparent system. It dictates what fairies can and cannot wish for, and its restrictions are the engine of the show's comedy. Can't wish for love. Can't wish for money directly. Can't reveal fairies to anyone. Can't interfere with true love. Can't wish away other wishes sometimes but can other times depending on the rule. The rules exist because every restriction was earned — some ancient fairy granted some catastrophic wish and the resulting disaster was so bad they added a rule to prevent it from happening again. Da Rules is essentially a disaster log formatted as legislation. Timmy violates, bends, or finds loopholes in Da Rules constantly. Jorgen enforces them. Wanda cites them. Cosmo has never read them. The rules are simultaneously the show's greatest plot device and its greatest source of comedy.

Appearance

A massive, thick book with a purple cover and gold lettering reading 'DA RULES.' It's enormous — bigger than Timmy, bigger than most fairies. The pages are endless and the fine print is microscopic. New rules appear whenever the plot requires them. It looks like a law library compressed into a single volume and then given the design sensibility of a children's show prop.
