Castle McDuck is where Scrooge comes from, which explains a great deal about him. The castle was in ruins when he was young — his parents, Fergus and Downy, lived in poverty in Glasgow while it crumbled. Scrooge rebuilt it as soon as he had the means. He used druidic magic stones in the reconstruction, which granted his parents and several family members immortality. This is the kind of thing Scrooge would do, and the kind of consequence he would engineer without fully thinking through. The castle is full of McDuck history: family portraits, the records of Clan McDuck going back centuries, and Simon McDuck, a spectrally-inclined ancestor with opinions about the family's choices. The family gathers here every five years when the mists part. Every gathering involves some form of supernatural crisis, which is tradition.

The Mists of Dismal Downs conceal it from the outside world most of the year, parting only every five years to allow visitors easy passage. The interior is old stone, old portraits, and the specific chill of Scottish highland architecture that no amount of hearth fire entirely removes.
