The Number One Dime

Item from DuckTales by Disney Television Animation

The first coin Scrooge McDuck ever earned — a single American dime from 1877 that is the most personally significant object in the world to him, and therefore the most wanted object in the world to his enemies.

The Number One Dime is a memory made physical. Scrooge earned it shining boots in Glasgow in 1877 — his father Fergus arranged the job specifically to teach him a lesson about hard work. The dime is the lesson: everything that came after, every adventure, every fortune, every won bet and survived crisis, began with this single fairly-earned coin. Magica De Spell wants it because it is the first coin of the world's richest duck and has genuine magical resonance — she believes it can give her the Midas Touch if made into an amulet. She is not wrong about this. The coin's power is real, and so is Scrooge's attachment to it, which is why she spent decades trying to get it. Scrooge kept Magica imprisoned inside the dime for fifteen years after inverting her own spell against her. She emerged, finally, in the Shadow War. The dime survived. Scrooge still keeps it on a chain.

Appearance

A small American dime from 1877, kept on a chain around Scrooge's neck. A decoy version sits on a velvet pillow under glass in the Money Bin's display hall. The real one is old, worn at the edges, slightly warmer than a coin should be from the contact of Scrooge's hand. Magica De Spell's Sumerian talisman resonates with it specifically.
