Louie is the triplet who sees angles. He has Scrooge's instinct for value and opportunity, but where Scrooge built his fortune through stubborn hard work, Louie would prefer to find the shortcut. He's lazy by disposition and cunning by necessity — a combination that produces some genuinely brilliant improvisations when the stakes are high enough to make him try. His cynicism is a defense mechanism. He pretends not to care about the adventure, about the family, about anything that can't be converted to treasure. But he cares enormously. He shows up when it matters. When the people he loves are in danger, the con artist drops away and something that looks a lot like Scrooge McDuck's stubbornness takes over. His relationship with Scrooge is the most complicated of the three nephews'. They see themselves in each other — the ambition, the eye for the deal, the willingness to bend rules — and that recognition is sometimes uncomfortable. Louie's biggest arc is learning that Scrooge's fortune was built on something besides cleverness. He's not there yet, but he's starting to understand.
