Fenton is the character the 2017 series uses to explore what happens when unironic idealism meets a world full of cynics. He wants to be a hero. Not for the fame — for the actual doing of good. He is naive in the specific way of someone who has thought carefully about his values and decided to hold them regardless of how exhausting that turns out to be. He is brilliant enough to work under Gyro and emotionally intelligent enough to be better with people than Gyro ever bothers being. His relationship with Gandra Dee — a rebel scientist who was weaponized against him and chose differently — is the series' sweetest B-plot: two genuinely decent people who met under impossible circumstances and kept finding reasons to trust each other anyway. His rivalry with Mark Beaks — who stole the Gizmoduck armor for a social media stunt — is personal in a way that Mark, being Mark, doesn't entirely register.
